Witney Rural Neighbourhood Update

Update for July

Anti-Social Behaviour

The team continues to progress with anti-social behaviour and underage drinking issues both proactively and reactively. We undertake regular patrols of areas where we know these problems will be occurring such as the various play parks in the town. It has been mostly quiet this month though.

On Tuesday 9 June the team was made aware of a fight that was going to occur between two groups of youths from local schools. The reason they were planning to fight revolved around a female pupil ending her relationship with a male pupil from one school and starting another relationship with another male pupil from the other school. There was a large gathering at the field next to Waddards Meadow of approximately 30 to 40 pupils. They were dispersed by the team and teachers. There were no arrests as no offences occurred but we will continue to monitor the situation and increase patrols at these times.

On Wednesday 17 June the team stopped a man on a motorbike who decided to perform a ‘wheelie’ in front of a police community support officer (PCSO). The 17 year old man was issued with a warning for his behaviour.

On Monday 22 June a man was found drunk on a bench in Witney by a PCSO. The drunk man repeatedly swore and urinated in the street. He was so drunk that he fell over while urinating and had to be taken away in an ambulance. Upon his return the team issued him with a fixed penalty notice of £80.

Underage Drinking

On Saturday 13 June the team attended the Leys recreation ground after receiving reports that youths were drinking underage. We attended and seized seven bottles of corona, one bottle of unidentified alcohol, one can and two bottles of pear cider.

Litter

The Neighbourhood Action Group has addressed the problem of litter and West Oxfordshire District Council has placed more litter bins around the town.

Other news

The Springboard Family Project is a registered charity based in Carterton, supporting families under stress by providing outreach support and structured children’s groups for children aged between four and 11 years old, which aims to address challenging behaviour and build self esteem. Members of the team have completed training and have been working regularly on a weekly basis to help educate the young persons and families that have been attending.

On Thursday 4 June elections for Oxfordshire County Council and The European Parliament took place for the West Oxfordshire area. The count of the votes then took place at the Windrush Leisure centre on Sunday 7 June. The team undertook high visibility patrols throughout both days and no problems were encountered.

On Wednesday 17 June a group of pupils with learning difficulties from Witney College attended the station. They were shown around and looked at the CCTV room and police marked vehicles.

On Friday 12 June a 16 year old female was warned several times about riding her bike on the pavement. She continually ignored the warnings and subsequently was issued with a £30 fixed penalty notice.

A spate of damages to shed door locks at the Newland allotments occurred overnight on 19 June. There are currently no reports of anything being stolen but we are carrying out the relevant crime enquiries. If you have any information please let us know.
